How an 18 year old turned $10 into $3000
Learn How to Make Money
from Storage Unit Auctions

What to Look For When You Are At a Storage Unit Auction

When you go into a unit, you have to know what to bid, so you have to know what to look for.

When that door opens, you will be completely surprised, the items can truly range from anything to anything.

But when you walk into units you will start to notice certain traits, of the previous owners. You will also be able to tell what the majority of the unit holds, just by looking around for only a short while.

For example, if you walk into a unit, and you see everything is strewn around, boxes rarely being used, you can tell that the renter didn’t care about his things. Or if everything is boxed up, clearly marked, and stacked neatly, you may have hit a goldmine. The owner definitely wanted to take care of the items inside, it’s a small wonder why they stop paying.

Sometimes the boxes are taped shut, and obviously you can’t tell what is inside them. Well there are a couple of things you can do if the complex owner doesn’t allow you to open the box.

First and this may sound rather simple, but check the box to see if there is any kind of label on it. Chances are good; if it says “Old Books” there will be old books in the box.

Second, try picking up the box that is taped shut, if it is pretty heavy you might have happened upon something valuable, if the box seems rather light, it might just be filled with papers, or clothes.

This will not always be the case, but from my experiences, you can expect good things from heavy boxes.

Also a large majority of the time, the complex owner will just let you open up the boxes to see what is inside. But before you go tearing up boxes, check with the owner to see if it is ok.

A lot of times, you don’t even have to see things in order to know what to expect. Just start sniffing around, literally.

You can tell a lot about the products by smelling them, if clothes smell old and musty; they just may be clothes that someone didn’t bother throwing away.

Also keep an eye out for small animals in the unit, or small holes in boxes. If you see something wrecked by an animal, chances are good that a lot of the other items in the unit are also destroyed, be very careful.

You can also tell about who the owner was just by looking through a few boxes, for example in one auction that I won, I only went through two boxes and I could tell that he was in the Navy. And after later going through the rest of the unit, lo and behold a lot of it was Navy memorabilia.

So trust your instinct when going through an auction, because chances are you will be right.
